Flash Mob To Raise Awareness for Alzheimer’s

Residents from three Traditions Management senior living communities, Traditions of West Chester, Traditions of Deerfield and Traditions of Lebanon, teamed up on August 24 for a spectacular purple flash mob at Liberty Center to raise awareness and donations for the Alzheimer’s Association! Approximately 50 residents wearing purple for the Alzheimer’s Association gathered at the green space in the Liberty Center shopping center. After quickly learning their steps from a dance instructor on-site, they danced to the “Dirty Dancing” theme song, “The Time of My Life,” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.

The flash mobbers encouraged their dance fans to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association reports that Alzheimer’s disease is a growing public health crisis in Ohio, as more than 236,000 people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in the state. Caring for a loved one with the disease brings a heavy toll, and the Association also reports that 414,000 family caregivers bear the burden of the disease in Ohio.

The idea came from Mary Jordan, the Activities Director at Traditions of Deerfield and Beth Deupree, Executive Director at Traditions of Lebanon. “Mary and I had been working on a potential project.  We wanted to host a flash mob with our residents and staff at the Liberty Center, the outdoor mall in West Chester.  We’d wanted to include Lebanon, Deerfield and West Chester,” Beth said. “The idea was to bring awareness to the communities, Alzheimer’s Awareness, and the Alzheimer’s walk.”

Events like this demonstrate that age isn’t a barrier to having fun and making a difference in the community.
